Probiotics and Prebiotics: Supplements For Your Gut and Overall Health

Probiotics are live microorganisms that are often consumed or applied to the body as a supplement to improve overall health. Probiotics can include “good” bacteria such as those in the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium families as well as sometimes yeasts such as Saccharomyces boulardii.

Prebiotics are non-digestible food fibers that stimulate the growth of healthy bacteria within the gut. Probiotics most often generate growth of Bifidobacterium but have also been shown to encourage growth of other healthy gut bacteria.

While the body of research is still growing, it appears these supplements have health benefits for many people including intestinal health, prevention of dental caries, allergies, asthma, urinary tract infections, upper respiratory infections, and more. Most healthy adults tolerate these supplements well but always check with your provider before starting a new regimen.
